A useful focus session starts with a small, clear task. Your iPhone can keep the time while you work elsewhere: on a page, in a notebook or at your desk. Here is a simple way to try a 25-minute work interval followed by a five-minute break.
Choose an outcome you can recognize
Write down one action before opening the timer. ‘Study biology’ is hard to finish; ‘answer the first five practice questions’ has a visible end. For writing, choose an outline or one rough paragraph. For admin, choose a small batch of similar tasks.
You do not need to finish an entire project before the timer rings. The point is to give the interval a direction. Keep a spare line on paper for unrelated things you remember while working, so each thought does not become a new task.
Prepare your iPhone, then start
Open Tempo Canvas and choose Classic mode for a 25-minute focus session and a five-minute break. You can use Custom mode when a different duration fits your task. If the selected artwork needs to download, let that finish before you put your phone aside.
Turn on an iPhone Focus mode if you want to limit notifications, allowing people or apps you need to hear from. Tempo Canvas times the session; iOS Focus settings control which notifications can interrupt it. Place the phone somewhere you can hear the end alert without repeatedly checking the screen.
Give the break its own purpose
When the interval ends, mark what you did and choose a short break. Stand up, get water or look at one detail in an artwork. If you are using Tempo Canvas, a completed focus session adds an artwork to your gallery; that can be a natural moment to stop working and look.
At the end of the break, write the next action before starting another session. After several rounds, consider a longer pause. Adjust the pattern if the task calls for it: a timer is a boundary you choose, not a test you have to pass.
What to expect from Tempo Canvas
Tempo Canvas is made for iPhone and requires iOS 17 or later. It combines focus and break timers with artwork reveals, a personal gallery and progress tracking. Three completed focus sessions are free; continuing with new focus sessions requires a subscription. Check the App Store for current availability and local pricing.
Begin with one session. If 25 minutes feels too long for the task you picked, make the task smaller or choose a shorter custom interval next time. A plan that you can repeat is more useful than an ambitious schedule you keep postponing.
