The awkward part of a short break is often finishing it. Choose something with a natural endpoint before the work interval begins. Then you will have a real pause without needing to decide, mid-break, when an endless activity is done.
Move to a different place
Stand up and walk to the kitchen, a window or another room. Get water, open the curtains or put one object away. Pick one small action rather than beginning a chore with many steps.
If you have been looking at a screen, a break can be a chance to spend a few minutes away from it. You do not need to fill every minute with another useful input. Leave some time unassigned.
Look at one artwork
Open a single painting in your Tempo Canvas gallery or in the website’s art collection. Choose a visible detail: one flower, a line of reflected light or the space around a figure. Stay with that detail for a minute, then return to the full image.
This works best as a bounded activity. Choose the artwork before you start browsing, and finish with one observation. If you would prefer a break from the phone entirely, save the art for the end of your study block.
Make the next start easier
Spend the last part of the break preparing one thing: open the next document, place a practice question in front of you or write a first sentence to continue. Keep this preparation brief enough that the pause still feels like a pause.
Avoid using every break to check all your messages. If messages are necessary, choose one specific check and an endpoint. An inbox can generate new tasks faster than a five-minute break can contain them.
Choose the break that fits the work
After reading on an iPhone, choose a break away from the screen. After writing at a desk, standing or moving may make more sense. After a visually demanding task, you may prefer to look away rather than open an artwork. There is no single break that fits every session.
Tempo Canvas provides focus and break timers on iPhone. The artwork is a reward for completing focus, while the break is time you can use however you choose. Start the next interval with one clear action and a duration that fits it.
